Flip the Switch!

Powering Opportunity Between Canada and Africa

Africa is rising.

With more than 1.2 billion people and the youngest population on Earth, eleven of the world's fastest growing economies, and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement unlocking the largest single market on the planet, Africa is shaping the global future.

From abundant solar energy to critical minerals for clean technologies, the continent holds the key to our shared climate and economic goals. Africa’s potential is unmatched, and it will be realized with investments in energy infrastructure. Energy to light homes, drive business and build livelihoods.

As a leader in clean energy, innovation, and finance, Canada is uniquely positioned to partner with Africa—lowering the cost of capital, unlocking investment, and scaling inclusive energy solutions.

This is a question of opportunity. Of partnership. And it’s one we must answer—right now.

Flip the Switch! calls on Canada to act now—by launching a bold energy and infrastructure partnership with Africa, rooted in its own Canada-Africa Strategy.

What Can We Do About It?

Change is possible by asking new questions, educating ourselves, and proposing new solutions to broken systems.

We call on the Canadian Government to take bold action by:

  • Launching Spark-Africa, a Canada-Africa Electricity Partnership as part of the implementation of its Africa-Canada Strategy.

  • Scaling investments in African renewable energy through FinDev Canada and Mission 300, an initiative by the African Development Bank and the World Bank.

  • Supporting implementation of AfCFTA to unlock the world’s largest single market.

  • Champion fairer debt restructuring and lower the cost of capital through blended finance tools, in line with South Africa's 2025 G20 priorities.
